“New ideas need old buildings.”
– Jane Jacobs, Death and Life of Great American Cities

The corner of Hanna Avenue and Snooker Street is surrounded by century-old brick-and-beam factories, adapted to the needs of a new century.

Snooker Street’s name is inspired by the old Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company factory, located on the southwest corner. Brunswick-Balke-Collender made billiard tables, bowling balls and lanes, and other recreational equipment. Today, the Brunswick-Balke-Collender building is home to new businesses including event promoter Live Nation, food retailer Organic Garage, and Loblaw’s digital innovation team. The neighbouring boiler plant is now home to The Craft Brasserie and Grill.

On the north side of Snooker Street stands the Barrymore Building, built in 1912 for Gowans, Kent and Company, a manufacturer of china and glassware, and later occupied by the Barrymore Furniture Company for over 50 years. Today, furniture retailers West Elm and Knoll occupy the first and second stories, along with offices and restaurants. Next door, 85 Hanna Avenue blends in with the surrounding heritage buildings, yet it was constructed in 2006 on former railway lands.
